Nord CE 5G Launched
The cheap Nord CE joins the OnePlus Nord family as a new intermediate choice, promising attainable performance and the return of certain much-loved features. The Nord CE returns the 3.5mm headphone port that has been gradually disappearing from most new smartphones, while staying true to the current OnePlus design language.
Processor & RAM
The abbreviation “CE” stands for “Core Edition” in this case, and it’s an excellent place to start when looking at its specifications. So don’t anticipate premium Snapdragon 888 performance; instead, expect a Snapdragon 750G with 6, 8, or 12GB of LPDDR4X RAM from OnePlus. The storage options are 128GB or 256GB.
Screen, Resolutions & Camera
On the front, there’s a 6.43-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels. Although the Nord CE is on the cheaper side, it still offers a 90Hz refresh rate and P3 colour gamut coverage. A 16-megapixel selfie camera pokes through a hole-punch type screen.
Meanwhile, there are three cameras on the back. The main sensor is a 64-megapixel camera with an f/1.79 lens, PDAF, and electronic image stabilisation (EIS), as well as 4K video capture at 30 frames per second. A 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera with a 119-degree f/2.25 lens and EIS sits alongside it.
Finally, instead of a telephoto lens, the Nord CE’s third sensor is equipped with a monochrome lens. With an f/2.4 lens, that’s only 2-megapixels of resolution.
Battery
The 4,500 mAh battery supports OnePlus’ Warp Charge 30T Plus for rapid wired charging, and the display sports an in-screen fingerprint scanner. According to OnePlus, you’ll go from zero to 70% in around 30 minutes. However, there is no support for wireless charging or waterproofing, and the body is made of plastic rather than glass, as found in flagship phones.
On the plus side, it’s really thin: the business claims it’s only 7.9mm thick and weighs 170g in your pocket. In terms of software, there’s Android 11 with OxygenOS 11 from OnePlus.
Availability and Price
OnePlus isn’t targeting the North American market with this phone, as it has been with past Nord phones. Instead, the OnePlus Nord CE 5G will be available for preorder in the UK and India starting today. It costs £299 ($413/Rs 24,999) for the 8/128GB edition and £369 ($504/Rs 27,999) for the 12/256GB version in the UK. Blue Voice, Silver Ray, and Charcoal Ink are the three finishes available.
