Konami announces digital-only eFootball (PES 2022), a free-to-play football game

Update: Recently Konami has revealed that its free-to-play eFootball 2022, previously slated for an early autumn release window, will now release on September 30th on consoles, and PC. As per Konami, it’s “basically a demo,” with more modes and features to be added in the coming months following its initial release.

Additionally, this version will have local matches with teams like FC Barcelona, Juventus, and FC Bayern, as well as cross-generation console matchmaking support at launch.

Original Article: Keeping long-running FIFA versus PES debate aside, Konami has announced the next installment in the Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) series with an all-new name eFootball. Konami claims that eFootball is a free-to-play digital-only game that is “completely rebuilt in Unreal Engine” and will be released this autumn with cross-play ability on different platforms like PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC, with iOS and Android versions to release later.

Konami says the details of the gameplay would be released next month and also mentioned a new feature ‘Motion Matching’ which “converts the vast range of movements that players make on the pitch into a series of animations, selecting the most accurate one in real-time”. Motion matching will be available in all eFootball platforms with last-gen consoles, PCs, and Mobile.

Motion matching is similar to what EA implementing in its upcoming FIFA 22 and state it as HyperMotion.

Availability

Konami’s eFootball will be made available on different platforms like PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10 and PC via Steam in the Autumn as a free to play title. And later it will also make its way to iOS and Android devices too. Although Konami didn’t mention about Nintendo Switch version on their press note.

Konami’s Roadmap

Konami has released the roadmap for the game divided into early autumn, autumn, and winter as shown below:

In early autumn, eFootball will be featuring local matches like Barcelona, Juventus, Bayern, and Manchester United. These all matches will be available for free and there will be cross-generation matchmakings like PS5 vs PS4, and Xbox Series X|S vs Xbox One.

In autumn, eFootball will allow cross-play between all consoles and PC to go live. With this, it will also allow gamers to build a team mode and online leagues in a global, competitive league. eFootball will also issue a battle pass called the Match Pass system with this gamers can earn items and players by playing the game.

And then in the winter, the company will add mobile controller support, full cross-play matchmaking across all platforms, allows to include mobile while using controller, and esports tournaments for pro and amateur players.
