Apple’s streaming service, TV+ hasn’t performed as well as the company hoped and for its next trick Apple is planning to add augmented reality content to its TV+ streaming video service next year, according to reports from Bloomberg. The new feature is said to take aspects of scenes in its original TV show, such as characters or objects, and which would then be overlaid onto the real-world environment via an iPhone or iPad app.

According to reports, Apple had originally intended to launch this feature this year, but coronavirus pandemic delayed its plans. According to Bloomberg Apple is doing this to draw in and retain the subscribers, as well as promote Apple’s AR technology.

AR DEVICES FOR APPLE TV+

Apple is reportedly working on a pair of head-mounted AR-capable devices. According to Bloomberg, Apple expects to launch an AR-capable headset by 2022, and which is followed by AR glasses as early as 2023.

Apple Is Now Adding AR Content Support For Apple TV+

Earlier this year it added a LIDAR sensor to the iPad Pro, explicitly to improve the AR capabilities of Apple tablets. LIDAR sensors will reportedly also be added to some of Apple’s upcoming iPhones to make some AR improvements already seen in beta builds of iOS 14.

Back in May, Bloomberg said that Apple is also planning to introduce companion podcasts for some TV+ shows. And now TV+ could debut bonus augmented reality content for shows sometime in 2021. Well Apple isn’t the only video streaming host that has turned to interactive content for drawing interest. Netflix is also investing in choose-your-own-adventure style shows that allow you to pick from multiple narratives and decide the characters’ fates.
