This modded Game Boy act much better than the real Apple TV remote

Many individuals who have used the Apple TV Siri remote may have wanted something that is not so darn frustrating to use, but most of us haven’t modded a Game Boy Color to function as one (via Gizmodo). That’s exactly what Otto Climan, the Italian YouTuber, did, and although his project looks elegant, it’s surprising how well it works using the original hardware of the Game Boy.

We’ve got to talk about the case he used. Apparently, it was created especially for the project by a company called Retro Modding, and with its combination of ’90s Apple and Nintendo aesthetics, it looks amazing. (It looks embarrassingly better than the original video game console on which Apple worked in the ’90s.)

If you’re familiar with the Game Boy Colour, you may note that the screen on Climan’s looks a little crisper and better backlit. He also gave the screen an improvement, in addition to replacing the case, using what looks like another aspect of Retro Modding.

However, apart from giving it an impressive aesthetic upgrade, there wasn’t a lot of hardware hackery needed. The Game Boy Color comes with an IR blaster in stock, which is still sponsored by the newest Apple TV set. Of course, to map the buttons to the IR controls, some custom software was required.

He loaded a ROM he programmed with the IR codes and button mappings of the Apple TV, and there you have it: a Game Boy Color that can control an Apple TV. And since it has real directional buttons and not a feisty touchpad, the job is probably better than the real remote of Apple.
