New Nintendo Switch OLED model is official but still don’t have 4K support

Nintendo Switch OLED model has been officially announced by Nintendo today with a larger 7-inch 720p OLED display which will launch on October 8, 2021, with a price tag of $349.99. This new Switch with OLED display isn’t the “long rumored Switch Pro” model that many of us were hoping for, meaning there is no 4K upscaling or NVIDIA DLSS support in it.

Features and Specifications of new Nintendo Switch OLED model

This 0.71 pounds (0.32kg) Nintendo Switch OLED model features a 7-inch 720p OLED display which only supports 1080p via HDMI in TV docked mode. Now apart from the display upgrade it has 64GB of built-in storage (double from the original Switch), a new dock with a built-in wired ethernet port for a faster and more reliable connection, improved audio for handheld or tabletop gameplay, and up to nine hours battery back up.

New Switch OLED model also includes a redesigned and adjustable kickstand for better tabletop gameplay.

Now talking about the upgrades in the design part, the Nintendo Switch OLED model now has rounded edges and much smaller bezels around the screen. This new model comes in a new white color option along with the classic Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Con and black dock.

As for the hardware upgrades, Nintendo has told The Verge that, “Nintendo Switch (OLED model) does not have a new CPU, or more RAM, from previous Nintendo Switch models.”

• Video output: Up to 1080p via HDMI in TV docked mode, 720p in handheld mode
• USB connector: USB Type-C for charging
• Battery life: Upto 9 hours

However, all current Nintendo Switch games and official accessories like the original Joy-Con are compatible with the Nintendo Switch OLED Model. Also, the new dock will also work with the original Nintendo Switch.

As you can see this OLED model lacks the 4K resolution support and upgraded hardware, suggesting that it isn’t the Pro model that we have been hearing from the last two years. And it’s highly unlikely that Nintendo will announce another Switch model anytime soon, so hoping for the Switch Pro model to arrive until 2022 will be disappointing.
