Coffee is one of the most popular beverages and as per experts research, around 2.25 billion cups of coffee are consumed by people per day worldwide. Morning with a cup of coffee may be what you need to begin your workday, sharpen your mind, and reduce the risk of ailments like Parkinson’s disease, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, and several types of cancers.
But too much of its consumption of coffee may lead to shrinkage in the brain’s volume and will increase the risk of developing Dementia, warns a new study from the University of South Australia published in Nutritional Neuroscience.
This was a large study that records the data of more than 1700 volunteers aged from 37 to 73 in the UK Biobank project. The result of the study is that those who consumed more than 6 cups of coffee each day had a 53 percent higher chance of getting dementia compared to those who drank one or two cups.
According to Epidemiologist Kitty Pham, a researcher from the University of South Australia, “Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world. Yet with Global Consumption exceeding nine billion kilograms per year, it’s critical that we understand any potential health implications.”
Coffee affects our brain in many ways including keeping us alert but sometimes affects us adversely when it comes to the relation between brain volume and dementia.
Researchers after studying for variables like sex, age, BMI, long-standing illness founds the relation between drinking more coffee and shrinking brain volume in volunteers, as well as the increased risk of dementia.
Brain shrinkage may also take place naturally with our age and some research recommends that there might be some connection between volume and dementia.
Lead Researcher Kitty Pham says, “We found that coffee in surplus was significantly associated with brain volume-mainly drinking more than six cups each day may put you at a risk of brain diseases”.
There is no answer to the question, Why does all this happen? More research is to be done for caffeine and coffee interaction with brain cells, whether those interactions end up being positive or negative.
We can conclude from the study that consumption of coffee more than six cups per day is directly linked to the higher risk of dementia in a large sample group.
