Apple unveils 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro supercharged with M1 Pro and M1 Max at its ‘Unleashed’ event

During its “Unleashed” virtual event, Apple unveiled its much-anticipited 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with a complete do-over, while taking the performance of these notebooks to a whole new level with the help of its new in-house silicon “M1 Pro” and “M1 Max”. This also marks Apple’s complete transition from Intel to its own silicon on the MacBook Pro series.

M1 Pro and M1 Max Specs

Before taking a closer look at these new Macbook Pros let’s talk bout these new members of the M1 family. Starting with M1 Pro, Apple claims this new processor is up to 70 percent faster than M1 and uses a 10-core design with eight high-performance cores and two high-efficiency cores. For graphics, it has an up-to-16-core GPU that is up to 2x faster than M1.

Next up, the M1 Max which Apple calls the “world’s most powerful chip inside a pro notebook.” M1 Max features the same powerful 10-core CPU, paired with a massive 32-core GPU for up to 4x faster graphics performance than M1.

Now in terms of configurations, the M1 Pro can be built with up to 32GB of RAM and can drive up to two external displays with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz. While the M1 Max can be configured with up to 64GB of RAM and can drive up to three external displays with up to 6K resolution and one more external display with up to 4K resolution at 60Hz.

Now let’s talk about the game-changing and claimed to be “the world’s most powerful notebooks” 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro – Apple’s next-generation MacBook Pro lineup powered by the M1 Pro and M1 Max processors.

In terms of design both MacBook Pros now feature thinner bezels which are claimed to be are 24-60% thinner with a height of the menubar is extended to accommodate the notch height equipped with the webcam upgraded to 1080p resolution (improved f/2.0 aperture), with up to 2x better low-light performance and the mini-LED display has more pixels, supports high contrast ration of 1,000,000:1 and 1600 nits of peak brightness, and also runs at 120Hz with ProMotion technology (first revealed with iPhone 13 lineup last month).

The 3.5 pounds 14-inch and 4.7 pounds 16-inch MacBook Pro now also features an HDMI port, SD card reader, and MagSafe for magnetic charging and there are a total of 3 Thunderbolt 4 ports available, with the upgraded headphone jack. Instead of the touch bar, there’s a physical row of function keys. 

The new MacBook Pro has a 14.2-inch active area and 16.2-inch active area with a screen resolution of 3,024 x 1,964  and 3,456 x 2,234 resolution respectively that have also been substantially increased for even higher DPI displays. And if that’s not enough you can run up to two external displays with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz at over a billion colors on M1 Pro powered Macbook Pro and up to three external displays with up to 6K resolution and one external display with up to 4K resolution at 60Hz at over a billion colors on M1 Max powered Macbook Pro.

Apple is also proclaiming up to 2-4x longer battery life while performing intensive tasks and video playback is rated at 17 hours for the 14-inch model, and 21 hours for the 16-inch model. One can easily also fast-charge the battery, topping up to 50% capacity in 30 minutes.

There’s also an upgrade in the microphone, which are now has studio quality, and a 6 speaker sound system with speaker tweeters, which have almost 2x larger for increased sound reproduction along with Spatial Audio sound reproduction.

Price and Availability

The entry-level 14-inch Macbook Pro, with the M1 Pro (eight CPU cores, 14 graphics cores), 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage, starting at $1,999 and 16-inch MacBook Pro, with the M1 Pro (10 CPU cores, 16 graphics cores), 16GB of RAM and 512GB of memory, starting at $2,499 is now available to pre-order from Apple.com and comes in silver and space gray color options.

The 14-inch model can be configured with either an M1 Pro processor or M1 Max processor, up to 32GB of RAM, up to 8TB of SSD storage, and includes a 67W USB-C and a 96W power adapter (higher-end configuration only) in the box. 

While, the 16-inch model, can be configured with either M1 Pro or the M1 Max processor and up to 64GB of unified memory, plus up to 8TB of SSD storage, and all configurations include 140W USB-C power adapters in the box.

For someone curious, the maxed-out 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 Max chip, 64GB RAM and a SSD storage of 8TB will cost you eye-watering $6,100.

While the maxed-out 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 Max, 64GB RAM and a SSD storage of 8TB will cost you as much as $5,899.
