Fortnite’s new season is here, and in it, some of Marvel’s greatest heroes join forces to help save the battle royale island.
The new season, actually Chapter 2: Season 4 — is called “Nexus War,” and it is a comic book-style event where main characters join up to fight against the planet-destroying villain Galactus. Those who buy the seasonal battle pass will be able to unlock the likes of Iron Man, Storm, Mystique, Doctor Doom, Groot, and She-Hulk, along with an amnesiac Thor. Developer Epic Games also says that a certain X-Men member will be available later in the season: “Be warned, Wolverine has been spotted on the island and he won’t come quietly.”
We’ve known since last week that the new season for Fortnite would be Marvel-themed, and Epic Games followed that up by releasing an in-game comic book detailing the upcoming story. The comics explain how the crossover happened; basically, Fortnite’s island’s power lured Thor and Galactus, eventually summoning other heroes including Iron Man, Wolverine, and Captain America to help. Thor drops his iconic hammer at one point, and a crater appeared in-game on the Fortnite Island where it landed. The comic ended with the phrase, “to continue in the fourth season.” Epic describes the conflict as “the war to save reality.”
Fortnite has been home to licensed superhero characters for a long time, from The Avengers and Batman to recent inclusions such as Deadpool and Aquaman. However, for the battle royale game, a whole themed season is new territory. The newest update follows season 3 in which the island was flooded by a giant storm for a time.
In the Fortnite world, there is a lot more happening than just a new season. Epic is currently in the middle of a legal tussle with both Apple and Google over payments for app stores. First, the developer snuck in a new payment option in Fortnite’s mobile versions; both Apple and Google responded by throwing the game out of their stores, resulting in a lawsuit from Epic. To generate support the developer also published a parody video and Fortnite tournament.
Because of that, Fortnite’s latest Marvel-themed season will be the first that isn’t available on all platforms. Many who are playing the game on Apple devices like iPhone, iPad and Mac have no access to the new update.
