OnePlus launched the OnePlus 8T nearly a year ago and the OnePlus 9R later this year with the 9 series. The official OnePlus 8T and OnePlus 9R datasheet stated that both the phones feature LPDDR4X RAM. But as per new reports, some users interpret that both the phones switch to faster LPDDR5 RAM.
The switch of RAM from LPDDR4X to LPDDR5 is detected by some users who use MSMDownloadTool to unbrick their phones, but it does not work. MSMDownloadTool does support LPDDR5 due to incompatible XBL (eXtensible Boot Loader).
Also, the buyers can’t tell before purchase if they receive the 8T or 9R with LPDDR5 or LPDDR4X RAM.
However, according to XDA Developers if you have ADB installed on your PC you can easily find out the type of RAM your OnePlus 8T or 9R uses.
When you connect your 8T or 9R with your PC and run the following command:
adb shell getprop ro.boot.ddr_type
It will return 0 for LPDDR4X and 1 for LPDDR5. Using Termux, you can also run this command on your phone itself. But remember you don’t have to type the ‘adb shell’ part.
Amir Siddiqui from XDA also tested this command on his 9R review unit and it has LPDDR5 RAM. On the other hand, the retail OnePlus 8T unit bought by Mishaal Rehman from XDA at the end of January features LPDDR4X RAM.
It’s weird that the OnePlus specification sheet still says that both the phones feature LPDDR4X RAM. Moreover, the company did not announce anything about this new upgrade.
