Where people are still dreaming to get 5G on their smartphones, Researchers at LG Electronics and Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft laboratory in Germany has accomplished a significant step towards the development of 6G, by beaming 6G THz (terahertz) range data over 100 m (328 ft) and setting a new distance record for 6G transmission.
Recently LG worked with the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft research laboratory in Germany to execute the test of transmitting 6G THz data wirelessly between the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute and the Berlin Institute of Technology.
Which turned out to be successful by traveling over 100 meters in an outdoor setting, breaking the record set by Samsung (15 meters) a few months ago. Though, LG has not clearly specified what the data was, how much was transmitted, or how long it took.
The main advantages of 6G over 5G are faster data transfer rates (expected to be up to 50 times faster than 5G) and lower latencies (should drop to about 10 percent of 5G’s).
And LG’s transmission test is a new milestone for 6G transmission, which is still in its initial stages. 6G is presently limited by its short-range and high power requirements.
LG and Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft were able to boost the 6G signal’s transmission distance by codeveloping a new kind of power amplifier that was able to transmit a stable signal with frequencies between 155 and 175 GHz, at a power level of 15 dBm.
And adaptive beamforming technology was used, which uses signals from an array of transmitters to increase their strength and boost 6G output. LG was testing many things at the same time, and it seems to have worked out.
Dr. I.P. Park, president, and CTO of LG Electronics said, “The success of this test demonstrates that we are ever closer to the successful application of terahertz radio communication spectrum in the upcoming 6G era”.
LG adds, in a press release, that 6G should become a global standard in 2025 and is being expected to be commercialized in 2029, while Samsung is aiming to deliver 6G in 2028.
