Donkey Kong is one of Nintendo’s oldest franchises in the industry, and it happens to be turning 40 years old in 2021. Although we probably won’t get the big anniversary celebrations as we see for franchises like Mario and Pokemon, yet a new report claims that Nintendo is planning to release a new Donkey Kong game in the upcoming future. Not only that, but Nintendo supposedly has one of its best developers on the project as well.
This rumor came actually from a handful of different sources. Nintendo Life has also reported that a new Donkey Kong game is in development at Nintendo EPD, the studio responsible for Super Mario Odyssey and a number of other major Nintendo Switch titles. Although there have been disclosures that this is a 3D game, Nintendo Life’s source states that it will be a 2D title.
So, while there are a couple of different sources for this one, they have one thing in common i.e., Nintendo EPD is working on a new Donkey Kong game, and given EPD’s history as Nintendo’s leading developer, the indications of that are pretty impressive. As of now, no one has any idea what to expect from such a game, but EPD has already delivered a number of excellent titles for the Switch so we’ll keep our fingers crossed and hope that the studio does something out of the usual with this Donkey Kong title.
Let us just emphasize the fact that they all are just rumors, that should only be considered close to the actual deal up to some extent only and because plans change every now and then in the video game industry. At the present, it’s reasonably best not to get our hopes up until we see what Nintendo has to announce at E3 2021.
One of the secrets of the Super Nintendo Land region of Universal Studios Japan is that a Donkey Kong-themed expansion is in the works. It’s very much possible that, much like Mario’s recent 35th-anniversary celebration, Nintendo could be holding a series of Donkey Kong announcements for the coming year.
