HTC Vive Air Leaked Online
The HTC Vive Air, an upcoming fitness-focused virtual reality headset from HTC, has been leaked online. The World Design Guide released information about the product as part of its annual awards. The product is expected to be officially unveiled at HTC’s upcoming ViveCon 2021 on May 11th and 12th.
What it is Designed for?
According to the copy on the World Design Guide’s website, the HTC Vive Air is “specially designed for virtual fitness” and “optimised for high intensity and long use.” The headset is made of quick-drying knitted fabrics that are inspired by lightweight and breathable sports shoes. These “ergonomic soft components” can be removed for washing thanks to a quick-release design. According to the website, the HTC Vive Air will be available in 2021.
Lockdown – Rise for VR Fitness
VR is becoming increasingly common for fitness activities during global lockdown, so it appears to be a well-positioned product. The founder of influential VR workout app Supernatural asserted in an interview with The Verge earlier this month that “fitness is the killer use case for VR” and that “workout software will be the first driving force of mass acceptance [of virtual reality] through a typical user audience.” Creating a comfortable, lightweight headset that doesn’t stink of sweat after a week or two seems like a no-brainer.
Will HTC Vive Air be Successful?
Is a sports-focused VR headset, on the other hand, likely to be a success for HTC? When the company’s initial Vive headset was released in 2016, it helped to launch the most recent version of the VR industry, but the company’s hardware has since been surpassed by rivals such as Oculus. Narrowing in on a particular (and growing) use case for the business might be a wise move.
