Kanye West has finally broken his silence on the reason behind crashing Taylor Swift’s winning speech at 2009 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), saying God wanted him to do it.
If you remember, in this famous incident West interrupted Taylor Swift at the stage back in the 2009 VMAs after Taylor won Best Female Video Award for ‘You Belong With Me’ by defeating BeyoncĂ©. West got up on stage with a bottle of Hennessy and told Taylor, who was just 19 at the time – “Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’ma let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best music videos of all time! The best music video of all time!”
And now after a decade or so of the incident, speaking with Nick Cannon, 39, in the latest episode of his podcast (Cannon’s Class) West finally revealed the reason behind this moment, explaining how he’d essentially been given the go-ahead by God.
Kanye West blames ‘God’ for Trashing Taylor Swift’s VMAs speech
The ace rapper told Cannon – “Right now, God is giving me the information,” he said. “If God ain’t want me to run on stage and say Beyonce had the best music video, he wouldn’t have sat me in front row. I would’ve been sitting in back,” West continued. “They would’ve made it the first award and he wouldn’t have made this so ridiculous, because I had never heard of that person before and ‘Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it)’ is one of the greatest music videos of all time.”
After that West explained why he was drinking from a bottle of Hennessy Brandy during the event in 2009, saying – “I was only drinking Hennessy Brandy because I didn’t want to go to the video music awards (VMA) show because it was a set-up.”
How Kanye West started reading the bible and learning about God
While West, 43, claimed he was under the influence of God on that fateful night in 2009 – which sparked a lengthy feud between himself and 30-year-old Taylor. He also talked about how he began reading the bible and learning about God after being hospitalized in 2016 for psychiatric observation and to be treated for temporary psychosis.
Kanye West said – “God brought me to my knees multiple times. First time that I was put into hospital in 2016, I actually started reading the Bible,” West continued. “And that was part of what God hit me with. As you know, God has a calling on all of us and God uses us in different ways.”
