Update: According to Deadline and Variety, due to creative differences with Donald Glover, Phoebe Waller-Bridge has decided to exit Amazon’s upcoming Mr. and Mrs. Smith series, based on the 2005 film starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Glover will remain onboard while Waller-Bridge’s role will be recast.
Original Article: Singer-actor Donald Glover and “Fleabag” star Phoebe Waller-Bridge are teaming up for a reboot of 2005’s hit film “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie for New Regency film and Amazon Prime Video. “Atlanta” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming”, star Glover revealed this news on his Instagram stories which Amazon later confirmed in a tweet. The new series, based on 2005’s hit will debut on Amazon Prime Video in 2022.
Amazon is doing this project in partnership with New Regency (the studio behind the original film). This new take on Mr. & Mrs. Smith is co-created by Glover, Emmy-winning “Fleabag” star Waller-Bridge and Francesca Sloane (who will also serve as showrunner). With Glover and Waller-Bridge set to receive executive producing credit. New Regency’s Yariv Milchan and Michael Schaefer will also exec produce, along with Jenny Robins of Wells Street Films.
The show which has quietly been in the works for months will also mark a reunion between the two actors after they featured together in “Solo: A Star Wars Story” previously.
The original “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” directed by Doug Liman and written by Simon Kinberg, starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie grossed $487 million worldwide at the box office when it was released back in 2005.
