Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, the creators of a “little known” franchise called Death Note are reinstating their systems to the anime game with Platinum End. Befalling later this year, Anime TV has dropped its first trailer in their official twitter account, 5 months after releasing teaser.
Viz Media has provided the official description of Platinum End,
“As his classmates celebrate their middle school graduation, troubled Mirai is mired in darkness. But his battle is just beginning when he receives some salvation from above in the form of an angel. Now Mirai is pitted against 12 other chosen humans in a battle in which the winner becomes the next God of the world. Mirai has an angel in his corner, but he may need to become a devil to survive.”
In total the 13 candidates are chosen from people who are about to kill themselves and they have 999 days to compete for the God’s post and either be elected or be at last standings to become God. The Platinum End story follows various candidates wanting to become God by any means necessary.
The manga sums up themes of justice, philosophical debate on existence, purpose of God, and initially there are action-oriented takes as well. The rules and power system of the God candidacy is explored throughout sets up for a really fun manga and art work is appreciable as well.
However, the manga is averaged out due to its slow pacing, tight writing, flat characters with no depth and rushed ending. It will be interesting to watch what creative freedom did Signal.MD (Production IG’s sub-studio), Hideya Takahashi (Jojo’s Bizarre adventure: Golden Wind) and Kazuchika Kise (GIS: The new movie) take as directors in the 24-episode long series.
