TV series based on the Kingdom of Wakanda is in development with Black Panther director Ryan Coogler for Disney Plus, the company Walt Disney Co. has announced. This new expansion in the Black Panther universe will be part of Disney’s five-year television deal with Coogler’s Proximity Media.
No further details about the series were given by the entertainment giant, and the Wakanda based project seems to be in its very early stages. But whatever may the case be, it is likely that series will not recast the late Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, which Disney has already made clear for Black Panther 2 too, following the actor’s death in August last year.
Ryan Coogler, who’s currently working on the Black Panther 2 movie (which will begin filming in Atlanta in July 2021 and is set to be released on July 8, 2022), said on behalf of Proximity Media that:
“It’s an honor to be partnering with The Walt Disney Company. Working with them on Black Panther was a dream come true. As avid consumers of television, we couldn’t be happier to be launching our television business with Bob Iger, Dana Walden and all the amazing studios under the Disney umbrella. We look forward to learning, growing, and building a relationship with audiences all over the world through the Disney platforms.”
“We are especially excited that we will be taking our first leap with Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and their partners at Marvel Studios where we will be working closely with them on select MCU shows for Disney+. We’re already in the mix on some projects that we can’t wait to share.”
