David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the creators, and showrunners of HBO’s mammoth “Game of Thrones” are working on a new project with Netflix. Which will see them teaming up with actor Hugh Jackman famous for his Wolverine role in X-men movies, to executive produce an adaptation of the 2018 novel The Overstory by Richard Powers.
As reported by TheVerge, novel The Overstory is a work of environmental fiction focused on the lives of a group of individuals and about how their experiences relate to a distinct set of trees along with the movement to preserve and protect nature.
David Benioff and D.B. Weiss signed a deal with Netflix back in 2019 worth $230 million for bringing new shows to the streaming platform. And this “The Overstory” adaptation will be the third for the same, after an adaptation of Liu Cixin’s sci-fi trilogy “The Three-Body Problem” and “The Chair” starring Sandra Oh from showrunner and executive producer Amanda Peet.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hugh Jackman, and Netflix’s co-CEO, Reed Hastings both are fans of the novel. The book won the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. In its announcement post, Netflix describes the novel as
“A sweeping, impassioned work of activism and resistance that is also a stunning evocation of the natural world. It tells the story of a world alongside ours that is vast, interconnected, resourceful, magnificently inventive, and almost invisible to us. A handful of disparate people learn how to see that world and are drawn into its unfolding catastrophe.”
