Attack on Titan ended after 11 acclaimed years this month. The end of chapter 139 has sparked controversies regarding the ill-treatment of certain characters, a sordid shift in tone, and quite a few unanswered questions.
Fans started petitioning author Isayam to rewrite the controversial ending with emphasis given to the author not being harassed in any circumstances.
One such petition addressed to Isayam reads, “Currently, Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) was one of the greatest, manga series I have ever read. I believe a lot of fandom is very disappointed with the current ending, the ending feels very rushed to me and to a lot of the fandom .” This petition was signed by 5,597 petitioners at the time of writing and speculated “to perhaps fit a more ‘shonen’ type of ending” either the publisher or editor was responsible for the change.
Following the backlash, the creators announced some additional story pages. The upcoming tankōbon volume 34th will house chapters 135-139 and feature extra pages apart from the original ending.
Meanwhile, the fourth and final season which ended this year is on hiatus and is anticipated to accelerate further in the winter 2022 anime season.
